Communicating with Someone Who Has Dementia

From not being able to find their words, to complete loss of language, dementia can be extremely distressing. It requires immense patience from carers.

How to engage respectfully with clients affected by dementia:

  • limit distractions where possible, such as a loud TV
  • Use appropriate body language
  • Speak at a slower pace and use a respectful tone
  • listen and be patient
