Home Maintenance

A leaky tap. Gutters that haven't been cleared in a while. A door that sticks, or a loose handrail that's been on the "to do" list for months. On their own, these things seem minor, but left unaddressed, they chip away at both safety and comfort at home. Home Maintenance is here to sort the small stuff, so your home stays safe, functional, and genuinely comfortable to live in.

What does Home Maintenance entail?

Home Maintenance covers the practical odd jobs that keep a home in good working order. Delivered under the Support at Home program, it sits alongside Light Gardening within the broader Everyday Living  category, and in fact, it’s often handled by the very same support worker.

With Chris Barnard Health, Home Maintenance can include:

  • Minor repairs, from a leaky tap to a sticking door or a loose fitting
  • Gutter cleaning, helping prevent water damage and blocked drainage
  • Safety-related fixes, like tightening a handrail or securing a loose step
  • General odd jobs, the kind of small task that would make daily life noticeably easier

Because the same skilled worker often looks after both your garden and your home maintenance, there’s no need to coordinate two separate visits, or explain your home’s quirks to two different people.

What Does it Cost?

As an Everyday Living service, Home Maintenance typically carries a contribution somewhere between 17.5% and 80%, based on income and assets, unlike fully funded clinical services such as Nursing or Physiotherapy. Your Care Partner can confirm exactly what applies to you and help fit it comfortably into your quarterly budget.

Not yet receiving government funding, or need a bit more help than your current plan covers? Privately funded Home Maintenance is also available, so a small fix never has to wait on paperwork.

Why the Small Stuff Actually Matters?

A dripping tap wastes water and can lead to bigger plumbing issues down the track. Blocked gutters can cause water damage that’s far more expensive to fix later. A loose handrail or an uneven step isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a genuine fall risk.

Beyond the practical side, there’s real relief in not having a running list of things that need attention. Clients often tell us the same thing: sorting out one small, nagging issue can make the whole home feel noticeably more comfortable, sometimes disproportionately so compared to how minor the job actually was.

What Sets Our Approach Apart?

One Skilled Person, Two Jobs Done Well
Our Home Maintenance workers are the same people who handle Light Gardening, skilled, capable, and genuinely good at the practical side of looking after a property. That means fewer new faces in your home and less time spent explaining the same details twice.

No Job Too Small to Matter
We know a leaky tap or a wobbly step might seem minor to raise, but we don’t treat it that way. If it affects your comfort or safety, it’s worth fixing, and we’re happy to take care of it.

A Team That Notices What You Might Not Mention
Beyond the task at hand, our support workers keep an eye out for other small issues around the home, flagging anything worth addressing to your Care Partner, so problems get caught early rather than growing into something bigger.

Your Rights and Our Commitment

Every Chris Barnard Health service, Home Maintenance included, is guided by your rights under the Aged Care Act 2024. You always have the right to:

  • Make decisions about your care and how your home is looked after
  • Be treated with dignity and respect, always
  • Have input into who delivers your services and how
  • Raise concerns and know they’ll genuinely be heard

Who's Eligible?

Support at Home participants generally qualify from age 65 (50 for First Nations people) if they need coordinated help to remain safely and independently at home. Younger people living with disability, dementia, or other unmet care needs may also be eligible.

Why Families Choose Chris Barnard Health for Home Maintenance?

  • One trusted face for garden and home. The same skilled worker who handles Light Gardening can take care of Home Maintenance too, meaning consistency and less coordination for you.
  • No job dismissed as too small. From a dripping tap to a loose step, we treat every fix as worth doing properly, because comfort and safety add up in the small details.
  • An extra set of eyes around your home. Our team notices things you might not think to mention, and passes genuine concerns on to your Care Partner before they become bigger problems.
