Light Gardening

Light Gardening is here to help, keeping your outdoor space safe, tidy, and a place you can still enjoy, without the physical strain falling entirely on you.

What does Light Gardening entail?

Light Gardening covers the everyday outdoor tasks that keep a garden safe and manageable. Delivered under the Support at Home program, this service falls under Home Maintenance within the Everyday Living category, alongside Domestic Assistance and Meals.

With Chris Barnard Health, Light Gardening can include:

  • Lawn mowing, keeping grass neat and reducing trip hazards from overgrowth
  • Basic gardening, weeding, pruning, and general tidying to keep things manageable
  • Safety-related outdoor maintenance, addressing hazards like uneven pathways or unsafe outdoor areas

It’s the kind of support that makes a real difference without demanding much time or energy, just a tidier, safer space you can genuinely enjoy.

What Does it Cost?

As an Everyday Living service, Light Gardening generally involves a contribution of somewhere between 17.5% and 80%, calculated based on income and assets, quite different from clinical services like Nursing or Physiotherapy, which are fully funded with no co-contribution. Your Care Partner can map out exactly what applies in your case, and help fit gardening support comfortably into your quarterly budget.

Haven’t started receiving government funding yet? Or simply need more help outdoors than your current plan allows? Privately funded Light Gardening is also available, so a well-kept garden doesn’t have to wait on paperwork.

Why it's Worth Getting Right?

An overgrown or poorly maintained garden isn’t just untidy, it can genuinely affect safety. Uneven paths, slippery moss, or grass hiding a hazard all add real risk to something as simple as stepping outside for fresh air.

There’s also a wellbeing side to this that’s easy to underestimate. Clients often tell us it’s less about the lawn itself, and more about still being able to sit outside, take in the garden, and feel a sense of pride in how the space looks.

What Sets our Approach Apart?

We Notice What Others Might Miss
Mowing and tidying is only part of the job. Our support workers keep an eye out for genuine risks while they work, a loose paver, a gate that won’t latch, a path that’s become uneven, and pass these on to your Care Partner so small problems get addressed early.

Continuity You Can Rely On
Rather than rotating agency workers, we invest in our own team, which means the person tending your garden today is likely to be the same one back next time, already familiar with your space and how you like it kept.

Your Rights, Our Commitment

Every Chris Barnard Health service, Light Gardening included, is guided by your rights under the Aged Care Act 2024. You always have the right to:

  • Make decisions about your care and how your outdoor space is managed
  • Be treated with dignity and respect, always
  • Have input into who delivers your services and how
  • Raise concerns and know they’ll genuinely be heard

Who's Eligible?

Support at Home participants generally qualify from age 65 (50 for First Nations people) if they need coordinated help to remain safely and independently at home. Younger people living with disability, dementia, or other unmet care needs may also be eligible.

Why Families Choose Chris Barnard Health for Light Gardening?

  • A keen eye for safety, not just tidiness. While working, our team stays alert to genuine hazards, not only the task at hand, flagging anything worth addressing to your Care Partner.
  • The same trusted person, visit after visit. Because we build our own workforce rather than leaning on agency staff, continuity is the norm, not the exception.
