The Company that Changes a Day
August 5, 2026
For many of the older Australians we work with, the hardest part of ageing isn't a health condition or a mobility challenge – it's the quiet. The hours between visits. The empty chair across the table. The phone that doesn't ring as often as it used to. Or the fact that grandkids have grown up and don’t visit as often as they used to.
This is where our Support Workers do some of their most important work, and it’s rarely the part that gets noticed.
Yes, they help with meals, personal care, and the practical tasks that keep a home running. But ask any client, and they’ll often tell you it’s not the task itself that matters most – it’s the company that comes with it. A real conversation over a cup of tea or a genuine question to uncover how their weekend was. Someone who remembers what happened last Tuesday and asks how it turned out. A familiar face who notices when something feels a little off and chooses to sit with them a while longer.
Some of our clients could go days without a real conversation, that visit isn’t just a service. It’s connection. It’s being seen. It’s proof that someone still shows up.
And that care doesn’t stop at the front door. Sometimes it’s a phone call from their Care Partner, or even from myself – just checking in. Not always about something urgent. Sometimes it’s simply making sure someone is happy with their service or following up on a small query they raised last week. But for the person on the other end of that call, it’s another reminder that they haven’t been forgotten. That someone is still paying attention, even between visits.
Our Support Workers carry that responsibility with so much heart, often without ever being asked to. They walk into someone’s home not just to complete a checklist, but as a familiar, trusted presence, sometimes the highlight of someone’s entire week. And behind them, our Care Partners are doing the same thing in their own way – through a phone call, a check-in, a follow-up that says “we’re still here.”
So, to every Support Worker and Care Partner on our team: thank you for the quiet, unseen moments of company you give so generously – whether that’s in someone’s living room or on the other end of a phone line. Thank you for treating loneliness as something worth showing up for, every single day. The difference you make in our client’s lives often can’t be measured, but it’s deeply, deeply felt.
In acknowledgement of Loneliness Awareness Week, and countdown to Aged Care Employee Day on 7 August, there’s no better time to recognise the role you play in easing that loneliness and to say THANK YOU for showing up, again and again, for the people who need it most.
You are so much more than support – for many of our clients, you are one of the very best parts of their day.
THANK YOU FOR BEING THE CARE AND HEART OF CHRIS BARNARD HEALTH.
