Staying Independent, Staying in the Game: Helping You Keep Doing What You Love

September 9, 2026

Independence in later life isn't just about being safe at home – it's about still being able to do the things that make life feel like yours. Catching up with old friends. Getting to appointments without relying on someone else's schedule. And, for a lot of Australians, not missing a moment of footy season.

With the finals just around the corner, we thought it was the perfect time to talk about what “Support at Home” really means in practice and how Chris Barnard Health helps our clients keep doing the things they love, on their own terms.

Independence is About More Than Safety

When people think about aged care support, they often picture the basics – help showering, a hand with the housework, someone to check in. All of that matters. But real independence goes further than getting through the day safely. It’s about still being able to say yes to the things that bring you joy: a family barbecue, a walk around the block, or cheering on your team on Grand Final day with your grandkids.

At Chris Barnard Health, our approach is built around exactly that. We don’t just deliver services we build a Care Plan around your goals, your routines and the things that matter most to you.

The Footy is Back – Let’s Make it Special

Take this time of year as an example. Finals footy is a big deal in so many Australian households, and for a lot of our clients, it’s about more than the game itself it’s the ritual around it. Maybe that’s having a few mates over, heading to a local pub to watch with old friends, or simply making sure the TV, snacks and seating are all sorted before kick-off.

For someone managing mobility challenges, memory changes, or simply less energy than they used to have, those small moments can start to feel out of reach. That’s where we come in. A Chris Barnard Health Care Partner might help organise transport to a friend’s place for the game, arrange a grocery shop so the snacks are sorted in advance, or simply be there for some company and a chat during the final quarter. It’s a small thing on paper but it’s exactly the kind of moment that makes independence feel real, not just clinical.

This is what person-centred care looks like in practice: not a generic service delivered the same way to everyone, but support shaped around what really matters to you.

The Services Behind the Moments

A day like Grand Final day doesn’t happen by accident it’s made possible by the everyday supports we build into every Care Plan. Depending on your needs, this might include:

  • Transport – getting to a friend’s house, the local club, or wherever the day takes you, without relying on family to rearrange their schedule.
  • Domestic assistance – a hand with cleaning, laundry, or shopping, so the house is ready for visitors and the fridge is stocked.
  • Social and community support – company, conversation, and assistance getting to social outings, so connection doesn’t depend on who’s free that day.
  • Personal care – support with showering, dressing, and grooming, so you’re feeling your best before guests arrive.
  • Allied health – physiotherapy and exercise physiology to help maintain the mobility and confidence needed to keep doing the things you enjoy.

Every one of these services exists under Support at Home funding, and every one of them can be woven into a Care Plan built specifically around you not a one-size-fits-all package.

Why Families Choose Chris Barnard Health

A dedicated Care Partner who knows you.

Every client is paired with a Care Partner who takes the time to understand your goals, your routines, and what independence looks like for you – then builds a Care Plan around it. It’s never one-size-fits-all.

The same familiar face, not a rotating door of strangers.

Clients see the same support worker around 80% of the time. That means less time re-explaining your preferences, and more time simply enjoying the company of someone who already knows how you like your tea or which team you’re barracking for.

A genuinely large, in-house care workforce.

Our Support Workers are trained, supported, and guided directly by us not agency staff who come and go. Every team member is chosen not just for qualifications, but for character: kindness, patience and reliability.

A team that walks beside you, not just a service that shows up.

Behind every Care Partner is a full multidisciplinary team nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff – all working together, with regular check-ins to make sure your plan is still working for you as your needs and interests change.

Independence Looks Different for Everyone

For one client, independence might mean staying in their own home for as long as possible. For another, it might mean not missing their grandson’s footy match or being able to host the extended family for the Grand Final without exhausting themselves in the process. Whatever it looks like for you, our role is to help make it possible – not to decide what your independence should look like on your behalf.

So as finals season rolls around, we’d love to help make sure you don’t miss a moment of it whatever “the big day” looks like for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Chris Barnard Health really help with something like getting to the footy, not just clinical care?

Yes. Support at Home funding covers more than personal care and nursing – things like transport, social support, and domestic assistance are all part of a Care Plan and can absolutely be used to help you get to a match, a friend’s place, or a family get-together.

What if I don’t have my Support at Home funding sorted yet?

That’s okay. If you’re waiting on an assessment or funding decision, we offer privately funded Support at Home services, so you don’t have to put your independence on hold in the meantime.

Can I choose how my funding is used, or is it decided for me?

Your Care Plan is built around your goals and preferences, not a fixed template. Your Care Partner works with you to decide what matters most, whether that’s help around the house, transport, or support to stay socially connected.

Will I have a different carer every time, or someone I actually get to know?

Most of our clients see the same support worker around 80% of the time. Building familiarity and trust is a big part of how we work, not an afterthought.

How do I get started with Chris Barnard Health?

Just give our team a call on 1300 602 469. We’ll talk through your situation, your goals, and how a Care Plan supports the things that matter most to you – footy season included.
